Here they come, marching into the Bavarian sunlight. Athletes from 128 nations under the spiderweb-like roof by Frei Otto and Günther Behnisch. This is the Munich Olympics. These are happy games, these are unpolitical games. This is the year 1972.
20 years after Nazi-Germany and WWII the country shows how light hearted, how modern, how young, how colourful it can be. On TV, the world will see.
But then this: Palestinian hijackers kill two Israeli athletes and take nine hostages. Live on colour-TV. Policemen disguised in red and blue tracksuits gather with machine guns on the flat roofs. The countdown for the rescue of the hostages is broadcast, unmasking the policemen’s tactic. The world watches live, so do the hijackers in their hideout. Later it will be called: The Munich Massacre

This multi-layered moment shows like no other, how (live) television relativizes the concepts of object and content, of space and time, projecting and creating another reality, in the here, now and then. A hyper-loop.
Donald Trump’s election is often attributed to his experienced ‘TV personality’. His campaign was particularly staged for a TV format. His reality show The Apprentice which aired for more than ten years, branded him as a ‘business genius’ and the nation’s boss. The question arises: why are the bad guys more entertaining? How do we tell, sell, spread, communicate, and broadcast our ideas, ideologies, and plans?

TOGETHER WE WILL THINK, DESIGN, BUILD (UP) AND RUN A TELEVISION STATION.
Celebrating TV as our format, we will question the established means and tools of architectural representation and the mechanisms that produce space and content. We will not only examine the existing tools but also establish new ones.
If, as architects, we are used to working with drawings and models, we will defamiliarize and explore the potentials of recording, editing, narrating, and reporting in architectural design and research.
The studio will be complemented by alternating support in different formats:

Kürzere Textpassagen aus philosophischen Hauptwerken, die jeweils um den Realitätsbegriff kreisen — zunächst Platons Höhlengleichnis — werden diskutiert und an zeitgenössisch, medialen Phänomenen, wie Fernsehen, Internet und Fake News auf ihr Erklärungspotential überprüft. Der hohe Abstraktionsgrad der philosophischen Denkungsart erlaubt im gelungenen Fall zusätzliche Perspektiven im Entwurfsprozess und im architektonischen Handeln — am laufenden Band.

The course will give an insight on recording, video editing and broadcasting techniques.

Aimed at approaching architectural research from its disciplinary complements, such as media theory, the course will teach students how to reference existing (film) material in the production of new content.
DRAWINGS AND MODELS (EN/DE), every third Tuesday

The course will provide the necessary skills for representing architectural plans and models through the medium of film.
Attendance to all supporting classes is obligatory.
