In the coming two semesters we will examine the architectural topoi of the ruin and the machine. Both conceptual categories occupy a marginal position in the architectural historical and theoretical referential space, although they describe fundamental underlying conditions of present reality. Both motifs are found both in built form and as metaphors in architectural design. At the same time, they describe a pair of opposites: the ruin determines its surroundings and seems to grow with it; it is thus maximally contextual, whereas the machine is without context. The ruin has lost its meaning and its purpose, the machine fulfils a certain function; it is determined semantically.
We will not aim to ‘reconstruct’ ruins and machines in the two semesters, but will make the structural features of the two chosen categories more productive in an experimental and research-oriented approach. To this end, we will begin the semesters by analyzing selected examples, found within and outside of the discipline of architecture. We will determine the program and site of the design project over the course of the semester, according to the idea as it develops. In spring semester we will be concerned with the machine.
The most important working instrument is the floor plan, as an abstract and simultaneously the most meaningful notation of a spatial configuration. Its sensuous and narrative expression is to be found in the photography of a large-scale model. It will not be about the abstraction of the model presentation, but about a detailed, illusionistic rendering. To create these pictures we will work together with the artist Shirana Shahbazi. |
