Beschreibung des Entwurfs-programmes |
The main goal of the studio is to produce form - based on personal interpretations and formulated in a general way. We name the representations of these processes the proposal.
The design process of the studio is focused in three parts within the semester.
A. Analysis
The first phase is purely analytical and self-reflective. The form is not considered yet. The student is asked to define what his/her fundamental interests are and to understand, rationalize and verbalize his/her motivation and fascination.
This method is an analysis of mind and behaviour, revealing the aspects of personal significance in the question of universal relevance. The more explicit and inclusive the distilled analysis, the more effectively it serves as a guiding principle for the second phase, i.e. the manifestation of form.
B. Manifestation of the Form
The abstract and formless analysis is transformed into a mental and physical manifestation – in the most holistic and feasible form possible. Site, space, function and construction are developed according to the guidelines of the analysis – with the goal of maximizing its intensity through the virtuosity and elegance of the architect’s craft. The full gamut of architectural tools is employed; the most effective method and style are to be used.
C. Representation
The transformation from analysis to form exists only in the author’s mind and remains as yet undefined in many aspects. In the process of representation the students concretize and hierarchize the mental form in order to clarify and communicate their thoughts to others.
As with the manifestation of the form, the aim is to single out the ideal representational instrument. By means of language the process finds its final form in what we term the proposal.
These three steps in the design process are not applied, as is otherwise mostly the case, as a consecutive method, but rather in a non-linear, largely iterative and fragmentary manner.
We are looking for universal proposals. Proposals that are valid, readable and understandable for all. Its origin is personal, its formulation and representation is universal. |
